Der Rhododendronpark in Gristede

The Rhododendron Park Gristede of BRUNS Pflanzen is located in the woodland Gristeder Wald on the road from Bad Zwischenahn to Wiefelstede.

The systematic planting of the Rhododendron Park in the shelter of tall pines was started on the initiative of Erich and Wilhelm Bruns in 1950. Their special interest was the layout of the park and the breeding of rhododendrons. The personal focus was on rhododendrons from the Himalayas and Japan, which they knew at first hand experience.

The collection comprises more than 1000 different rhododendron species and cultivars as well as open ground azaleas.

In 1985 beautiful ponds were added to the older areas of the park. Metasequoias cast their shade; Japanese maples and Cornus, Hamamelis, Magnolias and other specimen trees and shrubs offer interesting focal points amidst the fascinating rhododendron collection.

The rhododendrons and most of the other trees and shrubs have name labels. The 15-hectare park also serves as a show garden of the individual cultivars – so far, around 150 cultivars have been bred here.
